The Distributed Leadership Team will roll out training in Penn Literacy Network classroom writing/reading strategies in January 2010. Toward that end, it will be mandatory for all students to maintain a notebook for all classes.
Would you please provide a short response below with your preference with the type of notebook you currently require in your classroom and how you assess the classwork/homework that students write in their notebooks? Alternatively, if you do not require students to maintain a notebook, what type would you prefer your students to use?
You may consider:
- sprial-bound notebooks
- marble/composition books
- three-ring binders
- pocket folders with paper

spiral bound with perforated sheets
ReplyDeleteI require a journal and either a spiral bound or looseleaf notebook. I prefer a loose leaf notebook because I hate papers with ragged edges.
ReplyDeleteI check journals for stamps and notebooks for completeness.
Ideally, a 3 ring binder with a partition for journal. Kids fill up cheap spirals too quickly.
Notebooks can be used as a tool to teach students good organization skills.
ReplyDeletespiral notebook with lined perforated sheets
ReplyDeleteI provide my students with spiral bound notebooks. They are given their first one and can buy additional books for $.50. This way when I need to grade notebooks, I can request them to turn them in without worrying about other classes work in my books.
ReplyDeleteAs for pens/pencils, I allow the students to borrow them for the period by giving me collateral. I make the kids give me their IDs and they get them back.
I would prefer a three-ring binder with loose leaf included if possible.
ReplyDeleteI prefer three ring binder with looseleaf paper. Also notebooks to complete their do know and vocabulary.
ReplyDeleteNotebooks are the starting point to achievement. Students are to have a notebook of their choice and bring it everyday. Mr. Mulholland
ReplyDeletestudents get their own note books . they do class work and other activities
ReplyDeletelab reports. I check the note books every day and put a grade in the note book for that day. I also check the note books once a month and make them do missing work.
regular composition book
ReplyDeleteI prefer having students use spiral notebooks with preforated edges because it allows them to easily keep notes and hand in assignments.
ReplyDeleteI prefer students to have either a spiral notebook with a folder. Fivestar notebook that has the folder in it. Five star notebooks have a folder inside in which they can put guided notes or worksheets.
ReplyDeleteI would prefer a spiral notebook with perforated sheets...
ReplyDeleteI require my students to use three-ring binders with loose leaf paper and dividers for the class notes; homework journal for psychology students is additionally required.
ReplyDeleteI prefer a three ring binder so that handouts, quizes, and tests can be incorporated with the notes; or else a spiral notebook so the pages can be removed when work needs to be collected.
ReplyDelete3 ring binders allow for more than one subject, to add more paper and to attach handouts. The only thing they don;t have is the times tables in the black and white comp. book.
ReplyDeleteI prefer that students use looseleaf paper with 3-ring binders or folders.
ReplyDeleteMy students can use any notebook they want, as long as they have one. That being said, I prefer spiral notebooks with a supplemental folder to keep handouts in, or a three-ring binder. I often ask students to do classwork and tear sheets of paper out of their notebooks to turn in, so composition notebooks don't tend to work as well.
ReplyDeleteI usually assess student work that takes place in their notebooks based on the amount that they write and a glance through their writing to make sure they're on topic. And on days when students don't have their notebooks or previous work to refer back to, they lose credit for the day for not being prepared.
Ms. Depow
I allow students to have either a 3-ring binder with a section for health or a separate notebook specifically for health.
ReplyDeleteI would prefer a three ring binder with loose leaf paper
ReplyDeleteI require students to keep a 3 ring binder with paper and sticky notes as dividers (Do Now (contains objectives), Notes, Classwork, Vocabulary, Writes Workshop). Every Friday along with a vocabulary quiz students have a binder quiz which just checks that they're keeping up with the notebook. The quiz asks questions like "What was Monday's Do Now?" students may use their binders on the quiz.
ReplyDelete3 ring binder or spiral bound with pockets - it needs to have a ready supply of paper AND the ability to hold looseleaf paper.
ReplyDeleteI allow the students to have a spiral notebook or a folder with paper. Notebooks are graded at different points during the semester. Notebooks are graded based on notes, Do Now, and classwork.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ms. Rowan. Our inclusion classes are doing a much better job at staying organized!
ReplyDeleteI require them to keep a 3 ring binder. I provide guided notes sheets for them. Students only need their binder and something to write with for class.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really picky which type of notebook the students use as long as they have paper to take notes and answer class questions. If I had to choose one, I'd suggest using either spiral bound or composition notebooks because they're easier to keep organized.
ReplyDeletePackets of computer print-outs that they keep in either a folder or 3ring binder
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if students would come to school with pens and paper. I think that a 3 ring binder would be best
ReplyDeleteI require a spiral note book and a folder for my health class.
ReplyDeleteI provided each of my students with a 3-ring binder binder at the beginning of the year. Each day in class, they receive a numbered classwork with notes for a framework for guided notes as well as the day’s written activities. The binders stay in a cabinet in my classroom, so that students will have all of their previous work in class each day. I do not take a specific grade for the binder.
ReplyDeleteI have encouraged students to obtain a folder to take home notes or units to study or to complete homework.
-Mr. Quirk
I would like each kid to have a regular notebook.
ReplyDelete-J
I require a comp. or spiral type notebook to keep math notes definitions, vocab. examples etc.
ReplyDeleteVicki Baker
ReplyDeleteI require a 3 ring notebook with tabs. Students may insert a spiral notebook in the front. I discourage 2 pocket folders - our students really need help getting organized
